Protests erupt outside Kasba Police station as 3 arrested in alleged Kolkata college gang rape
A tense situation unfolded at the Exide Battery Factory in Jagatdal as the union office faced demolition. The premises has been deployed with heavy police force from the Jagaddal police station.
The root cause of this tension stems from a police operation aimed at clearing the Exide Permanent Labor Morcha's office from the factory. This labor union has been actively advocating for the rights of workers, primarily focusing on their demands for a 20% compensation hike and the permanentization of temporary laborers, among other requests.
Union members had expressed their discontentment with the factory authorities for not meeting their demands. On a fateful Tuesday afternoon, tensions escalated when the police forcibly evicted individuals occupying the labor union office and subsequently locked it down. Allegations of police lathi charges against workers further fueled the unrest, creating a volatile atmosphere in the vicinity.
